Arts Practice Training for Artists
understanding trauma, building compassion and developing integrated responses through arts practice
Course outline :
Continuous Voices is a project that connects trauma and creativity to stand for change and resistance against sexual abuse. The project acknowledges the courage of those who have stood for change and provides hope for voices to be heard.
The project will inform the creation of a permanent space in Ballarat to reflect, determined through unique, creative collaborations with community. These creative collaborations will be artist‐led and involve broad-reaching and inclusive participation by the Ballarat community.
The project will fund and support up to 5 creative projects in 2020 and 2021, facilitated by local artists. To prepare local artists to be part of Continuous Voices, free online training will be offered to help the artists as facilitators, better understand the impact of trauma, develop compassionate responses and enable integrated responses through their art.
This training will give participants an overview of working with people affected by trauma, practical arts strategies and an opportunity to practice creative ideas to highlight the benefits of an integrated arts method. The training was initially conceived to be delivered through a workshop to be held on 8 and 9 May at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the training will now be offered on this website and via a private Facebook page.
This free training is open to artists who are new to these concepts or have worked with trauma in their arts practice before.
You will need to commit approx 1-2 hours per week between 8 May - 24 July 2020 to complete the course.
At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to apply for funding support through the Continuous Voices project.

Trauma informed and trauma integrated arts practice :
One of the key principles we will be discussing in the workshops is working in a ‘trauma informed’ or ‘trauma integrated’ way in your arts practice. For an outline of these concepts and how they are used in Beyond Empathy’s practice approah follow the below link:
Online workshop overview :
The first session of the workshop is an introduction to the project and community connection to the project by Cr Belinda Coates. Begin the training by viewing this video and then follow through to links to other video and resource content on the right hand side of this page. You can also join the facebook group for the training where you will be able to interact with other participants and share ideas. All training resources will be shared on this webpage and via facebook as they become available in the coming months.
In the online modules of this training page you will be introduced to concepts related to understanding the impact of trauma, developing compassion and empathy and learn about integrated responses through a variety of arts practices. We also hope you will join us in the online spaces where the Continuous Voices team and local artists can introduce themselves and share their thoughts on the training modules. You might also like to share your current work and understand how arts practice intersects with the idea of healing in the trauma space.
As you work through the training modules you will explore ideas in more detail and dive deeper into some projects that use trauma informed arts practice including examples presented by Beyond Empathy, Loud Fence and local arts practitioners who have worked with trauma. We will also be suggesting some creative activities that will help you to get a sense of the practice and test some skills related to arts participation for people affected by trauma.
Workshop materials including video and online resources will be available every Friday throughout the course duration. We encourage you to complete each module within 2 weeks allowing the course to graduate together in time for applying for project funding.
