Arranmore Furniture

How did the Arranmore journey begin?

Arranmore Furniture started over 20 years ago, when I decided to follow my passion for making furniture.  I commenced accountancy at university but found this was not where I felt my future lay.  After spending many years in Australia and the North of Britain trading antiques and dabbling in furniture making on the side, I decided to pursue my genuine desire for making furniture.

Arranmore Furniture actually began when I made my parents kitchen table at Arranmore Estate which is on the outskirts of Ballarat at Miners Rest.  The kitchen table is still in use today.  From there I began to specialise in the manufacture of Australian Made custom made solid timber tables.  They are renowned for their natural oil finish which distinguishes itself in the market in comparison to a regular sprayed finish offered by other manufacturers and retailers.  Since then, I have grown my business from a shed at the rear of my parent’s property to a state-of-the-art facility in Ballarat and a showroom in High Street, Armadale.

How would you describe your practice?

The craftmanship of my tables has continually developed and been refined over time.   I have a sound process in the manufacture now from board selection and engaging customers in this process to sanding and in oiling to achieve the right look and feel.   I love the challenge of customer creativity.  Clients will arrive with a look in mind and it’s the best feeling when this can be executed and they are really happy with the design and look.  There are some designs which are a go to and others that require more time, R and D to achieve structural integrity as well as the look – whilst these are challenging sometimes, they are also what continues to drive innovation in my business.

What are you working on right now? What is your latest project?

My latest and biggest project is relocating production!  I have moved my 5000sqm operation from Wendouree to Delacombe which has taken up a lot of time but moving to a state-of-the-art facility was essential.  My immediate focus is to ensure the factory is setup to produce effectively and efficiently.  As far as manufacturing projects, I am always working with clients on different shapes and designs so working on developing a range of furniture to put to market.  I have several designs that are very popular, and other items are custom, so it will be really exciting for me to have a range with a table, matching coffee table and buffet.

What is your connection to Ballarat?

I was born, raised and educated in Ballarat.  I spent my childhood living at Miners Rest and completed my secondary education at Ballarat Grammar.  My mother still lives on the Estate at Miners Rest.

How would you describe the creative community/industry in Ballarat?

I am really experiencing a growth in being presented with customer creativity in bespoke furniture manufacturing.  This is heavily influenced from other creative spaces locally – it’s coming from everywhere from art to culture and its driving creativity on all facets.  The growing creative landscape is affecting my designs positively and the spectrum of design is sometimes challenged by new and interesting shapes, or they may be a step back to something that is now in trend which can be brought to life in a more contemporary light.  Delivery time is always my favourite part of the process when the artistry of it all really comes alive – I can see the piece in situ and in the harmony of the space.  The table may be the feature, or it may be a compliment to an amazing piece of artwork on the wall, or a fabulous window or view.  It’s everchanging and I never tire of it.

Can you give us three words that sum up your inspiration?

Personalisation - Practicality - Passion
